Transforming Community Through the Arts
Across the country art-based places are playing a vital role in community revitalization. Performing arts centers, innovative new museums, and grassroots art spaces are bringing diverse groups together, attracting new investment, and creating new destinations in cities and neighborhoods that have been struggling to survive. Different types of art-based places have provided exciting new tools in the ongoing challenge of revitalizing our nation’s cities, and have taught us new and important lessons about the nature of community and its vital links to the creative process.

The Bruner Loeb Forum chose the transformative power of art as their first topic in order to share the many diverse ideas about creative placemaking that have been celebrated as Rudy Bruner Award winners and through the work of Loeb Fellows and alumnae. Places have been selected for their varied approaches to art-based placemaking and community building. Some are large scale projects, others grassroots enterprises. All of them have something important to teach about the power of art in community revitalization.
