ART EDUCATION
The invaluable nature of art education was recognized in every forum. Art education is widely viewed and experienced as an important tool for bringing children together; for teaching creative thinking and problem solving skills; for exposing them to a world of creative thinking that challenges their imagination; and for leading young people to the discovery of their own interests and talents. At least four of the Bruner Loeb Forum presenters, Inner-City Arts in Los Angeles, Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild, NJPAC, and Gallery 37 were founded on the idea that arts education is uniquely essential to inner-city youth.
If we are to empower our youth. If we are to prepare them for a dynamic future—we must help them develop their creativity…As the essence of the human experience—it shapes the future… It is the building block that connects our human experience to life itself, a core discipline for developing human potential.
Bob Bates, Inner-City Arts
In developing the creative potential of all participants Inner-City Arts builds upon its belief in creativity as the basis for achievement in other areas of education. Art, after all, calls upon non-linear thinking skills to develop imagination, and creative thinking, relating to many aspects of problem solving.
Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild in Pittsburgh sees art education as a tool for enhancing the quality of life for members of its community. MCG defines itself as“a multi-disciplinary, minority-directed arts and learning center that employs the visual and performing arts to foster a sense of accomplishment and hope in the urban economy; a series of workshops and residencies through which visiting artists employ the creative process to enhance the quality of life through beauty and purpose; pose meaningful questions and responses to life’s challenges; and inspire the quest for community and empathy.”
NJPAC, with the most extensive art education program of all the presenters, views it as essential to their mission. In their art education program, master classes, performance, residencies and partnerships, NJPAC reaches out to young people, drawing them into the world of artistic accomplishment, and involving not only children, but their families in the experience. Art education serves as an essential tool to introduce the world of performance art, and NJPAC itself, to New Jersey, and remains a mainstay of the NJPAC mission.
