Anchor Institutions: Expanding Roles in Placemaking and Sustainability
Memphis, TN
May 9, 2008
The Memphis Forum concluded a year-long Urban Design and Placemaking Workshop series initiated by the Turley Fellowship at the University of Memphis and funded by the Urban Land Institute-Memphis. The Forum explored issues related to the role of anchor institutions such as universities in their communities. Universities across the country are expanding their missions with regard to sustainable practices; community revitalization; and urban development. They are connecting with local communities and seeking to be active partners. The Forum was structured to promote discussion and meaningful dialogue and our hope was it would serve as a springboard for future initiatives in Memphis, and help anchor institutions in their desire to positively impact the cities and regions around them. Please review the documents below for a more detailed review of the day resulting disscussions.
